Australia’s Black Opal A Precious Natural Wonder

Australia’s Black Opal is the world’s most precious opal and is mostly found in the harsh outback town of New South Wales at Lightning Ridge.

The Black Opal has a dark toned body which can range from dark grey to a deep jet black.  This is related to the body of the stone and not the overall general appearance of this lovely stone.

The dark body of the Opal reflects the rainbow of colours in such a way that it can almost be mesmerising to the beholder.

Unlike many other opals the Black Opal has carbon and iron oxide trace elements within the stone.  This causes the unusual darkness that provides this stone with a rainbow of colour that other opals just don’t have.

Another Opal That Can Be Found In Australia

· The Crystal Opal - The word Crystal Opal refers to any unset opal that has a transparent, translucent or semi translucent body.

Light can pass through a Crystal Opal and this stone can display a wide variety of colourful spectrums.

The town White Cliffs in New South Wales Australia seems to have the largest source of Crystal Opal, although this wonderful stone can also been found in other mining towns in New South Wales such as Lightning Ridge.

Some Australian Opals History

The Australian Opal mining history really started off quite slowly and definitely wasn’t a boom like a Gold Rush.

A German geologist named Professor Johannes Menge discovered a green opal in South Australia approximately 80 kilometres north of Adelaide around 1840.

The first legal mine issued with a permit was issued in 1871 in the outback town of Quilpie.

In 1873 the Boulder Opal was discovered in the hills of the Barcoo district. Following the discovery of other opal deposits throughout Australia miners pioneered the Aussie outback in search of precious Australian Opals

Thanks for the interesting opal summary on this page. I have been in the opal industry for around 40 years and we opal miners and cutters in Australia appreciate international promotion because unfortunately it has taken many years for the world to get to know about this amazing stone. Mainly because we have not had the resources to promote it properly. But this is all changing with the internet because everyone can check out this remarkable gemstone online. Nice presentation. thanks, Peter
